The Jonathan and Barbara Silver Foundation Grant for Writing on Sculpture

You can access the online Application Form here.

Applications are open February 1 – May 31, 2024.
We must receive your application no later than 11:59pm EST on May 31.

The application is divided into sections that must be completed sequentially.
Below, we have listed the information you are required to provide and the documents you are required to fill out.

Personal Information

  • Name
  • Email address
  • Mailing address
  • Phone number
  • Date of birth
  • Confirmation of U.S. citizenship, legal residency in the U.S., or holding an O-1 Visa (if your application makes it to the final round and you are an O-1 Visa-holder, you will be asked to provide documentation of your Visa).
  • Photo ID
  • Website url (optional)

Project Proposal: Part 1

  • Project Title
  • Project Description (short summary — up to approximately 50 words, a max. of 300 characters, including spaces)
  • Project Description (longer version — up to approximately 300 words, a max. of 2,000 characters, including spaces)
  • Confirmed or potential publishers (provide a list in approximately 100 words, a max. of 650 characters, including spaces) (optional)
  • I confirm that, if I am to receive a grant from the JBSF, I will complete my project within one year of receiving the award (indicate by answering “Yes”).
  • Is this proposed project a book? If yes, please attach a Table of Contents PDF with chapter summaries to the Application Form (a max. of 750 words)

Project Proposal: Part 2

  • Explain how your proposal relates to, or is different from, other writing on your project subject (Up to approximately 250 words, a max. of 1,660 characters, including spaces)
  • Explain the project proposal’s significance to your writing practice (Up to approximately 250 words, a max. of 1,660 characters, including spaces)
  • Which ideas in the realm of sculpture are you currently exploring? (Up to approximately 250 words, a max. of 1,660 characters including spaces)
  • Specify if the project focuses on one artist or on multiple artists, and explain your motivations for choosing these specific artist(s). (Up to approximately 250 words, a max. of 1,660 characters, including spaces)

Budget Proposal

  • Please provide, in paragraph form, a budget that itemizes the expenses necessary to complete the proposed project; and briefly describe the expense categories and the amounts for each category that the grant will cover (approximately 250 words, a max. of 1,660 characters, including spaces). See the Terms and Conditions for eligible expenses.

CV

  • You will attach your CV in a PDF file to the Application Form, with the following format:
    LastName_FirstName_CV.pdf
    The document should be no more than three pages long, and should include your education, employment, and publication history/bibliography. Maximum file size: 10 MB.
  • If there are aspects of your history and life that are relevant to the project, you are welcome to include them here in a brief biography (optional) (750 words maximum). Attach a PDF file to the Application Form with the format:
    LastName_FirstName_Bio.pdf

Writing Samples

  • Provide up to three separate writing samples, at least one of which has been published for the first time within the last five years. Maximum file size: 10 MB for each file.
  • Attach each writing sample as a PDF file to the Application Form. The file name should be formatted:
    LastName_FirstName_Writing_Sample_1.pdf
  • The top of your document should contain the following:
    • Name
    • Title
    • Date
    • Publisher (applicable to at least one writing sample)
    • Word count (max. of 2,500 words)

Letters of Reference

  • We require two letters of recommendation in support of you as a writer and thinker. Please provide some information about the two individuals who will write the letters (full name, position, and their affiliation/connection with you). Please ask them to send their letters to info@jonathanandbarbarasilverfoundation.org, with the subject “(Your Name) Letter of Reference”.
